17-04-2005 - The consumption of meat stabilizes. Spaniards spend over 15,000 million euros per year in meat products.
This numbers represent 22% of the total food expenditure. Spaniards prefer the traditional stores for fresh meats and the supermarkets for transformed meats.
Spaniards spent over 15,000 million euros last year in meat products, which represents 22% of the total expenditure in food products. This means that Spanish households consume 2,770 million kilos of meat per year, or 67.6 kg. per capita. This data comes from the Ministry of Agriculture’s Chief Analyst of Consumption address at the IV AECOC Seminar for meat products, Carmen Fuentes.
The Ministry’s data also confirms that the consumption of meat has stabilized in the past few years, because of an increase in consumption of bovine and other fresh meats and a decrease in rabbit, chicken and ovine/goat meats.
When looking at the preferred channel to purchase these products, we see that Spaniards prefer the traditional store for fresh meats, but they prefer the supermarkets for transformed meats (frankfurters, hamburgers…).
